I would go to a local microbrewery and see if they have a sampler you could buy. If he really likes beer, he would probably appreciate trying some new beers out. Plus, if you only buy one kind, he may not like it and will be stuck with beer he doesn't want. If you don't have a microbrewery around you, you could also go to a beer store with a good selection and pick out a few different beers and make a basket for him- maybe with a beer stein and some gourmet snacks to enjoy with the beer.
References :
A couple six packs of some VERY good microbews from your area. If you don't know of any, just ask the clerk at the liquor store.
References :
Stay away from the big three(Anheuser Busch,Miller,Molson/coors) They all mass produce horse whizz. Find a local craft brewer. It will be the freshest and the best tasting. Barring that, SOME imports would be the second choice. Authentic German beers are your best route in imports as they have the strictest quality standards.
References :
Former brewery rep for the world's largest brewer. Was in the beer business for 11 years.

Most micro brew houses off the beers of best flavors.
Look up your local hot micro breweries and research whats in what. In Cleveland area we have many great tasting beers from Great Lakes Brewery

I also like Sam Adams Cherry Wheat (knock your socks off)
References :
Wow, what bad suggestions. Here is a list of the top beers in the world. I highly recommend the Westvleteren Abt 12. It has been the number one beer in the world for many years going and can be purchased off eBay easily. I've had several and can't even begin to describe just how wonderful it is. I would get anything in the top 50.

Other than that I would suggest using the below webpage to find a local craft brewery. In Michigan you've go Bell's, Delaware has Dogfish Head and Indiana has 3 Floyd's just for a few examples. Once you've located a brewery near you, look up the reviews and see what they have available.

I've been collecting and sampling rare and craft beers for many years now. If you have any questions about then list or what/how to get some of them fee free to email me through my profile.
References :
http://ratebeer.com/Ratings/Ratings-Top50.asp

Being in the business myself, I would suggest looking into products from a micro brewery. A good executive chef is always looking for an unique item to both sample and "discover".

Anyone can buy expensive beer. A gift would be a new tasting experience.
References :
Go to some local liquor stores and see if they don't have some gift packs of beer assortments. I've seen them at my local liquor store in wooden boxes, but I'm sure there is more than one type available.

You can also ask the clerk for his recommendation based on what they have available. They might stock some 'premium' beer to consider.
